What a gamma squeeze actually is
A gamma squeeze is a self-reinforcing loop between a rising stock and the market makers who sold calls on it. To grasp it you need one prior idea: gamma is how fast an option's delta changes as the stock moves. Dealers who sell call options are left short those calls, and they typically neutralize that exposure by buying the underlying shares — a practice called delta hedging. The catch is that the amount of stock they must hold is not fixed. As the stock climbs, the delta of the calls they are short rises too, so their hedge falls behind and they must buy more shares to stay neutral. Gamma is the measure of how fast that requirement grows.
String those forced purchases together and you get the loop. Higher price forces more hedge buying, which pushes the price higher, which forces still more hedge buying. That is the entire mechanism. It is not magic and it is not a conspiracy — it is ordinary risk management by desks that would rather not be, running in a direction that briefly amplifies a move instead of absorbing it.
The feedback loop, step by step
- Traders pile into short-dated, out-of-the-money call options on one name, often around a story or a social-media surge.
- The dealers who sold those calls are now short a large, concentrated block of gamma.
- The stock ticks up toward the strikes where all those calls sit. Their delta rises quickly — that is the high gamma at work.
- To stay hedged, dealers buy shares. Because the position is so concentrated, the buying is large relative to normal volume.
- That buying lifts the price further, which raises delta again, which demands still more buying. The loop feeds itself — until the option flow slows, the calls are rolled or expire, and the pressure releases.
The release matters as much as the ramp. A gamma squeeze is powered by hedging demand, not by earnings, cash flow, or any change in the business. When the call buying stops, the mechanical bid vanishes, and the same dealers can unwind hedges into a falling tape. Moves built this way tend to round-trip.
Why they are rare
The reason the term feels more common than the event is that most option flow does the opposite. On a typical day, in a typical stock, dealers are net long gamma, and their hedging dampens moves — they sell into strength and buy into weakness, quietly smoothing the tape. A genuine squeeze needs an unusual setup to flip that:
- Dealers must be net short a large pile of gamma, concentrated in one name.

- The stock has to actually travel toward those strikes to trigger the hedging.
All three at once is uncommon. That is why gamma squeezes cluster in a handful of heavily-shorted, retail-crowded names rather than showing up across the market. Most days, the dealer complex is a shock absorber, not an accelerant.
Why even the famous case is disputed
The example most often cited is GameStop in January 2021. It is worth knowing that the story is contested by the people who investigated it: the SEC staff's October 2021 report on those events examined the episode and stated it did not find evidence that a gamma squeeze — or a short squeeze — was the primary driver of the price action. Reasonable analysts still disagree about the mechanics. The honest takeaway is not that gamma squeezes are fake, but that even the single most-cited instance is genuinely debated, and that real-time dealer positioning is not public. By the time a chart is being labeled a gamma squeeze on social media, the diagnosis is a hindsight guess and the move has usually already happened.
The crowding trap
This is where the concept turns expensive. Chasing a trending "gamma squeeze" almost always means buying short-dated out-of-the-money calls after the story is loud — which is exactly when it is most crowded and most costly.
It is a close cousin of the short squeeze in this respect: both are real, both are violent, and both are far easier to identify on a chart afterward than to enter safely in the moment.
