Trading Silver (XAG/USD): Two Metals Under One Ticker

On the monetary side, silver answers to the same forces as gold: it pays no yield, so its appeal rises when the opportunity cost of holding a zero-yield asset falls, and it carries a partial haven bid in risk-off episodes. On the industrial side, silver is an input — the best electrical and thermal conductor there is — used in solar panels, electronics, EVs, and countless contacts and connectors. When manufacturing accelerates that demand firms; when a recession looms it softens. Silver is the only major precious metal that answers to a central-bank chart and a factory-orders chart at once.

Driver 1: real rates and the dollar — the monetary engine

Start with the part silver shares with gold. Because silver pays no interest, the yield you forgo by holding it — its carrying cost — is set by real (inflation-adjusted) bond yields, best proxied by the 10-year TIPS yield. When real yields rise, that cost climbs and silver faces a headwind; when they fall or turn negative, the cost fades and silver tends to catch a tailwind. And because silver is priced in dollars, a stronger dollar makes the same ounce more expensive for non-dollar buyers, which usually weighs on the price. Real yields and the dollar are typically driven by the same thing — Fed policy expectations — so a single surprise can hit silver through both channels at once.

Driver 2: industrial demand — the cyclical overlay

This is the part you will not find in a gold guide. Because industry consumes roughly half of mined silver, the metal carries a growth-sensitive, cyclical component stacked on its monetary behavior. Solar photovoltaics have become one of the fastest-growing sources of silver demand, and electronics and EVs add steady pull. The practical consequence: silver can rally on a strong global-growth outlook even while gold is flat, and it can get hit harder than gold in a recession scare, because a slowdown threatens the industrial half of its demand that gold does not have. Supply adds a quirk — most silver is mined as a byproduct of copper, lead, zinc, and gold mining, so output does not respond quickly to silver's own price. That inelastic supply is part of why the metal moves so violently when demand shifts.

The gold-silver ratio: silver's relative-value gauge

The gold-silver ratio (GSR) is the single most-watched number in silver trading. It is simply the price of one ounce of gold divided by the price of one ounce of silver — how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold.

Gold-silver ratio = gold price per ounce ÷ silver price per ounce

Traders read it as a relative-value and sentiment gauge. A high ratio means silver is historically cheap relative to gold; a low ratio means it is historically rich. Over recent decades the ratio has swung across a wide band — spiking above 100 in the 2020 panic and compressing toward the 40s-to-60s in strong bull runs. Because silver is the higher-beta metal, the ratio tends to fall when the sector rallies (silver outrunning gold) and rise when it sells off (silver falling faster). None of that makes it a timing signal on its own: "cheap versus gold" can stay cheap for years, and the ratio has no fixed level it must return to.

A worked example: reading the ratio

The numbers below are illustrative and hypothetical, used only to show the arithmetic:

  1. Take the two prices. Gold is quoted at $2,400 per ounce and silver at $30 per ounce.
  2. Divide. 2,400 ÷ 30 = 80. It takes 80 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold.
  3. Put it in context. Against a long-run range that has often sat between the mid-60s and the high-80s, a reading of 80 is toward the elevated end — a hypothetical hint that silver is relatively cheap versus gold, not a prediction that the gap will close.
  4. Watch the direction. If the sector turns higher and silver's high beta kicks in, silver might run to $37.50 while gold rises to $2,475 — pushing the ratio to 66 (2,475 ÷ 37.50). The ratio compressed because silver moved more in percentage terms, which is the typical bull-market pattern.

The ratio is a lens, not a lever. It tells you how silver is priced relative to gold; it does not tell you which way either one travels next.

Why silver swings roughly twice as hard

Silver is a smaller, thinner market than gold, and it wears its dual identity as amplified volatility. When the monetary and industrial cases point the same way they compound, and silver's higher beta means it typically travels a larger percentage than gold in both directions. That cuts both ways — the trait that makes silver exciting on the way up makes it punishing on the way down. Treat it as a higher-octane expression of a precious-metals view, not a gentler one.

Sessions and catalysts

Silver trades nearly around the clock in an over-the-counter market alongside COMEX futures, and like gold and FX its liquidity concentrates during London hours and the London/New York overlap. The catalysts that matter most are US macro releases, because they reprice real rates and the dollar in seconds: CPI and the jobs report land at 8:30 am ET, and FOMC decisions hit at 2:00 pm ET. Silver's industrial side adds a second catalyst set that gold largely ignores — global manufacturing data (PMIs) and the China growth outlook — because those speak to the factory-demand half of the story.
