Pip value is only half of risk. The other half is how many pips your stop is away — that's what sets your real dollars at stake. Our position size calculator turns it into a lot size, and every FX card on our public record posts its stop in pips before the move. Join the floor →

How pip value works

A pip is the standard smallest move in a currency pair — 0.0001 for most pairs, and 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. Its dollar value is simply the pip size times your position's units, converted into your account currency. When the pair is quoted in USD (like EUR/USD), a standard lot is a clean $10 per pip and no conversion is needed. When USD is the base currency (like USD/JPY or USD/CAD), the raw pip value lands in the quote currency and gets divided by the current rate to reach dollars — which is why this calculator asks for the price on those pairs. See what a pip is and forex lot sizes for the plain-English version.

Common questions

Why is EUR/USD always $10 per pip on a standard lot?
Because the pip value is measured in the quote currency, which is USD. 0.0001 × 100,000 units = $10, no conversion needed. That clean number is one reason beginners often start on USD-quoted majors.
What is the pip value of gold (XAU/USD)?
On the common 0.10-pip convention, one pip on a standard 100-oz lot is $10 — and a 0.01 move ("a point") is $1. But brokers disagree on gold pip definitions, so check your contract specs; our gold pip value guide walks through both conventions.
Why do JPY pairs behave differently?
Yen pairs quote to two decimals, so one pip is 0.01, not 0.0001. And because the quote currency is JPY, the raw pip value comes out in yen and must be divided by the current rate to reach dollars — so pip value moves as the rate moves.
Does a bigger pip value mean a better trade?
No — it just means a bigger position. More dollars per pip cuts both ways: it amplifies gains and losses equally. What matters is sizing the position so your dollar risk at the stop is an amount you've decided in advance.
